Coaching philosophy

We become stronger, smarter people through stress. The right amount of stress results in learning through brain adaptation, strength through muscle growth, and endurance through cardiovascular adaptation. With the right mindset, nutrition, recovery and training regimen, our body moves toward health and wellness. Unfortunately, many of us suffer from an overwhelming amount of stress that can negatively impact our daily life, health and performance goals. In fact, our body does not distinguish between work stress or the stress of a high-intensity workout--they are both direct stresses to our body. Finding PEAK means both balancing the many stresses in our life (good and bad) and utilizing mindfulness, nutrition, movement and recovery to manage these stresses.

A PEAK Coaching plan provides three key inter-related elements for your life and performance:

WELLNESS

Wellness is a positive practice of overall health and wellbeing. Our programs offer clients a custom set of strategies for managing stress, balancing technology and media, and developing a positive mindset through visualization or mindfulness practices. Mindset drives our relationship with food, our motivation for exercise and our attitude toward life. Mindset is critical for proper balance and these approaches are integrated into our holistic PEAK Coaching plans.

Nutrition

Getting the real story on nutrition these days is incredibly challenging. We are surrounded by social media and morning shows promoting today’s fad diets and research stories about magic weight loss and beach bodies. Unfortunately, nutrition is not so simple, and while some of these fads may result in weight loss, they typically leave you more unhealthy than when you started. Our holistic approach to nutrition is not simply about what food you eat and when--its about combining our nutrition goals and practices with our mindfulness practices and our movement activities. We shift our mindset from cutting out this and cutting out that, to putting the right “fuel” in our bodies to encourage and support an active lifestyle.

Movement

Movement is central to health, wellness and performance. For every person, no matter your goals, moving your body in a variety of ways has been proven to improve health, body composition, longevity and happiness. So, move--move for joy, weight loss, social connection, exploring nature or pushing your performance limits. Depending on your goals, we develop a custom movement program for you that balances cardio (endurance), pliability (flexibility) and strength. Each contributes to a well-balanced lifestyle, and each connects with different aspects of nutrition, mindset and long-term, injury-free health.

About thom

Thom Long is a coach, professor, husband, father and athlete. Thom has spent the last fifteen years developing as an amateur athlete, a self-professed middle-of-the-packer. He has not won a world championship, nor any tremendous feats of athleticism. What makes Thom a great coach is that he is a real person who has paved his own way from sedentary chain-smoker to Ironman athlete, while working full-time and sharing the family responsibilities of raising two children and a few dogs along the way.

Thom is never one to just adopt someone's plan or ideal training philosophy. Rather, his path had roadblocks and triumphs, each offering a unique opportunity to learn. Alongside the technical skills of running, swimming and cycling, he has focused on nutrition (for weight loss or muscle gain), meditation, yoga and various wellness practices. Thom combines his research and study with his real-world experience to help others grow from the place where they begin their journey.

Thom is an AFPA Certified Personal Trainer, USA Triathlon Certified Coach and an Ironman University Certified Coach.
